Wadler-Kaplan Music Shop opened in Houston, Texas in 1943. Through the years, its patrons included professional musicians, music teachers, ensembles, universities and music students, including a young, aspiring pianist named Richard Dowling. After more than fifty years of service as Houston's most valuable classical sheet music dealer, the store was acquired by Pender's Music of Denton in May 2000.
Upon learning of Pender's decision to cease operations in Houston, Richard Dowling purchased the store in October 2008 just two weeks before its scheduled permanent closing date. Its absence would have left Houston, the fourth largest city in America, without a comprehensive sheet music dealer. Mr. Dowling viewed the opportunity as a way to serve the local music community he had benefited and learned from as a student.
